Services
Drift Ground Investigation Ltd provides a ground investigation service primarily for geotechnical, environmental and structural investigations. Our aim is to supply a high quality, reliable and efficient service that will provide a professional approach and presence on site whilst carrying out your required works and representing your company as a sub-contractor. Our rigs include a Boart Longyear Deltabase 051 and a new Dando Terrier 2002, both rubber track mounted, self propelled, dynamic sampling rigs. Both rigs are suitable for restricted access sites and will fit through a standard doorway opening (see Technical Details for more information). We also have a range of other equipment including a cable percussive rig, diamond coring and hand held window sampling equipment. We are willing to work flexibly and have the capability to fabricate equipment for specialist contracts.
Our services include;
- Cable Percussion
-
Dynamic Sampling and Probing (Dando Terrier and Boart Longyear Deltabase)
-
Hand held window (less) sampling
-
Diamond Coring
-
Inspection / Trial Pitting
-
Logging to Eurocode / BS 5930
-
Factual Reporting
-
Interpretative reporting, geotechnical design and desk studies through our partner company RJM Ground Solutions Ltd
We have recently purchased a rotary head for the Dando Terrier and can offer opehole drilling and rotary coring services. We also have a Down The Hammer for faster penetration in hard formations.
Geotechnical Applications:
-
Standard Penetration Testing (SPT)
-
Dynamic Probing (DPH and DPSH) – Retrieved or sacraficial lost cone to BS1377
-
Undisturbed sampling (U100 standard system), and facility to take U38 samples
-
Low disturbance continuous soil sampling (windowless sampler with semi-rigid plastic liner)
-
Installation of geotechnical installations and instrumentation including piezometers, standpipes, inclinometers, extensometers
-
Greater progress through difficult ground using two strings of casing (128mm and 116mm diameter)
-
Concrete coring to core through surface pavements
-
Limited down hole coring
-
Sub-sampling and logging to BS5930 (1999) available upon request

Health and Safety
Our commitment to health and safety is a key aspect to our business. As a result our 4x4 support vehicles are fully equipped with a first aid kit, fire extinguisher and health and safety file including generic method statements and risk assessments for the activities carried out. A cable avoidance tool and transmitter can also be providied. Our operators are CITB CSCS certified, have an NVQ in Land Drilling, are appointed person first aiders and are experienced in working in hazardous environments including sites categorised as ‘Red’ under SISG guidelines. Our drilling rigs have diesel engines and can be fitted with a spark arrestor if required for working safely in hazardous environments. We also carry welfare facilities including provision for hand washing and lepto wipes/cleanser. Our operators are equipped with all the essential PPE including gloves, hard hat, safety boots, ear and eye protection, hi-visibility clothing, overalls and waterproofs. Additional PPE can be provided upon request. Our cable percussion rig incorporates a winch guard and carries the necessary certificates. We carry out regular documented inspections and maintenance procedures on all of our rigs. Please also refer to the Technical Details section of the website for further information regarding the health and safety features of our drilling rigs.

Installations/Instrumentation
Our drillers are experienced in installing boreholes to a high standard from inclinometers, extensometers and piezometers for geotechnical purposes to ground gas and water monitoring standpipes for environmental purposes.
As we transport our dynamic sampling rigs and equipment to site using a 4x4 support vehicle and box van trailer, we are able to carry significantly more weight than using a van. As a result we can provide a certain amount of installation materials when we mobilise to site, reducing timing/delivery problems, particularly on short duration sites in remote areas. Competitive rates for installation materials can be provided upon request.
Sampling
We understand the need to recover good quality samples. Our sampling system uses windowless sample tubes with a semi-rigid plastic liner. Sub-sampling can be carried out using 1 litre plastic pots or appropriate sample containers for contamination analysis. The standard U100 sampling system can be used which uses aluminium liners, as opposed to the plastic liner system. Although plastic liners reduce the overall cost of obtaining undisturbed samples the cutting shoe and outer tube is much thicker resulting a significantly more disturbed sample compared to the standard system. This is highlighted by comparing the area ratio of approximately 48% for the plastic liner system compared to 29% for the standard system. U38 samples can also be recovered if required.
Diamond Coring
Diamond coring with an electric coring rig is also offered as a separate service. Coring of surface pavements and concrete slabs can be undertaken to confirm condition and thicknesses or to allow conventional drilling to continue into underlying strata. Horizontal and inclined coring can also be undertaken which allows structural investigations of retaining walls, bridge abutments, tunnel linings etc.
'Down the hole' structural coring can also be undertaken using the hydraulic coring attachments on our dynamic sampling rigs. This allows investigation of bridge backing and viaduct decking for example.
At Drift we specialise in ground investigations. We also work closely with our partner company RJM Ground Solutions Ltd to provide a competitive solutions focused package of ground investigation and geotechnical design.
